How solid minerals can lift Nigeria’s earnings by $50b

To boost Africa’s $110b inter-trade market  NIGERIA stands to earn about $50 billion from her abundant solid minerals if the necessary framework is put in place to harness the resources. Indeed, the nation has been estimated to possess over 400 solid minerals, 40 of them available in commercial quantities, though only 13 of these are being exploited at present. This is believed to have dragged down the sector’s contribution to the national economy to a paltry 0.3 per cent and generating about $1.5 billion into the country’s coffers. A document obtained from Solid Mines Limited, showed that the sector could add as much as $50 billion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by climbing from 0.3 per cent to 10 per cent growth in the next three to five years, if the necessary investment is made. Besides, optimal utilisation of the solid minerals could also create over one million direct and indirect jobs within Nigeria and far increase Africa’s inter-trade activity, which...

Aaron Rodgers yelled what direction the Packers were running, which didn't work at all

Aaron Rodgers has been downright masterful with his pre-snap actions and  ability to score the Packers free plays  by manipulating the snap count. That doesn't mean he's always calling out complicated audibles to fool people, however. Sometimes he just tells everyone exactly where the play is going.  Rodgers called an audible which led to one of the Green Bay lineman asking "which way." With time running out on the play clock, Rodgers didn't have time to spare so he just yelled out "right!" The Packers did indeed run right and it's almost as if the Chiefs knew exactly what direction the play was going since they stopped it for a 2-yard loss. Weird. Knowing Rodgers, this is probably all part of some long con. Next time he's going to yell "left!" but the Packers will run right. Either that or he's just trying to make the playing level a little more equal since his right arm is essentially an unfair advantage.

Snowden says aliens could be trying to get in touch right now

Edward Snowden worries we're not hearing aliens' messages.  HBO/Screenshot by CNET We have many assumptions about extraterrestrials. We assume that, in some way, they'll understand how to communicate with us. We assume they may well be more advanced than us. We assume they have spaceships and weapons that can zap us into granular matter with just a twitch of their noses.  What if it's all one big misunderstanding? Edward Snowden, who used to be a contractor for the NSA before he became famous for leaking some of its practices, worries that we might currently be deaf to alien communication. He expressed this view during a fascinating chat with Neil DeGrasse Tyson  on his StarTalk podcast . This was courtesy of a robot-controlled video screen from his Moscow location -- a communication system that DeGrasse Tyson described as "an iPad on wheels." It was wide-ranging chat between two nerds. Sample from Snowden: He once read a metallurgy textbook. S...

CHIBOK GIRLS! Shekau’s uncertain fate delays negotiations

Is Abubakar Shekau, the acclaimed leader of Boko Haram, alive or dead? This is the question that is reverberating within the camps of the terrorist organisation and causing unease among  top leaders and members of the group, which has been killing and maiming since 2009.  Shekau has not been seen in action for a long time, fuelling speculation that he might have been killed or fatally wounded in battle with the Nigerian armed forces. The Department of State Security Service (DSS), under the Jonathan administration, had announced the death of the Boko Haram leader many times, and many times he resurfaced in poorly produced videos, claiming he was alive and could not be killed. The military and intelligence organisations in Nigeria, however, have chosen  to work with the premise that Shekau is alive and must be driven to his early grave for the Boko Haram war to  end. To them, the capture of the terrorist commander, dead or alive, remains a top priority...

No arrest warrant for Saraki — Police

A mid  the controversy generated by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) order for the arrest of Senate President Bukola Saraki, the police said, yesterday, they were yet to receive a bench warrant to effect it. “I am yet to see one”, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, said while responding to a Sunday Vanguard inquiry. The CCT, headed by Justice Danladi Umar, had, in a ruling on Friday, ordered the IGP and other security agencies to arrest Saraki and produce him before it tomorrow (Monday) to face a 13-count charge bordering on corruption and false declaration of assets.  The order and subsequent bench warrant followed Saraki’s failure to appear before the tribunal for arraignment. The CCT order was in negation of an Abuja Federal High Court order, on Thursday, stopping the tribunal from commencing the trial of the Senate President.  While stopping the trial, the High Court summoned the Federal Ministry of Justice to appear before it tomor...

107 killed in crane collapse at Mecca's Grand Mosque

A powerful storm toppled a construction crane Friday afternoon at the Masjid al-Haram, or Grand Mosque, in Mecca -- killing at least 107 people and injuring 238 others, Saudi Arabia's civil defense authorities said on Twitter. Photos and video on social media showed the crane crashing through the mosque roof and the aftermath, with bodies, blood and debris spread across the courtyard. The crane fell  10 days  before the start of  the Hajj , the annual pilgrimage expected to bring 2 million people to Mecca. The Masjid al-Haram is the largest mosque in the world and surrounds Islam's holiest site, the Kaaba -- a cube-shaped shrine that worshippers circle.  One man said the bad weather contributed to the chaos after the crane toppled over. "We just washed and were getting ready to head to the Masjid al-Haram for the Maghrib prayer (sunset prayer)," said Yahya Al Hashemi, 30, a CNN iReporter who  shot iPhone video of the crane  striking the roof of the...

Sad Story of the World’s Hairiest Family

Jesus ‘Chuy’ Aceves and his family suffer untold hardship because they were born hairy. On his way to work at a Mexican building site, he is howled at by strangers who jeer at him, calling him names like ‘satanic beast’, before whipping out their cameras to take pictures of him. This is a normal day in the life of the ‘Wolf Man’ who became a world-famous circus performer whose entire face is covered in thick, black hair. His entire family of 30 are all covered in the same dark fur as him – and cruelly shunned in their home town of Loreto, north-west Mexico, because of it. But Chuy, has now told of how locals tell them to ‘go live in the woods’, slay their pets to get them to leave and ‘cross themselves’ when they walk past – as if they were demons. The children of the ‘hairiest family in the world’ refuse to have more kids for fear they will suffer the same cruelty if they do. Even Chuy’s daughter Karla admits it would be ‘difficult to bring someone like me into the world’. The...

Buhari, Osinbajo declare assets, president’s assets worth less than VP’s

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have made public their assets. This was revealed in a statement signed by the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Garba Shehu. According to Shehu prior to being sworn in on May 29, President Buhari had less than N30 million to his name. He also had only one bank account, with the Union Bank. Like initially done on Skype, Microsoft’s translation service has now been integrated with Cortana, the personal digital assistant on Windows 10. Users of Windows 10 will now be able to translate words, phrases, and sentences into almost 40 languages from the desktop. Real-time translation feature can be accessed by saying “hey Cortana, how do you say” followed by the sentence they want to translate, and the language they want to hear it in. For example, you could say “hey Cortana, translate ‘where is the nearest taxi stand’ in French?” to find out how to get a cab from your Paris hotel, or “Hey Cortana, how to say ‘garlic’ in German?” And get the answer, “Knoblauch.”  The user will also be able to translate without using voice by typing the same request into the taskbar and Cortana will find a translation into the chosen language. Cortana could previously aid with some translation, but the new feature is now more comprehensive, offering more languages than before, includi...

Wole Soyinka, Oyinlola tussle over Osogbo UNESCO Centre’s leadership

A solution may not be in sight over the leadership tussle rocking the Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding (CBCIU), Osogbo, Osun State, a category II facility under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). In the last few weeks, statements and instructions concerning the centre and its programmes have been emanating from two Boards: One headed by the Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka; and other led by a former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Soyinka, who was appointed Chairman, CBCIU Board by Osun State Governor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola in August 2012 told The Guardian at the weekend that even when the court case instituted to determine who among the two groups has the right to oversee the affairs of the centre is dispensed with, “there is also ethical issue that must be resolved.” Before Soyinka’s appointment, Oyinlola was holding the fort as the Board Chairman since January 2009 when the ...
