Serena Williams Contemplates Life After Tennis

Fresh off of her grand slam  victory  at Wimbledon, Serena Williams candidly acknowledged  the physical toll tennis has exacted on her body and an awareness that, at age 33, she has begun to position herself for life after tennis. “We were so fast,” Serena said of herself and her sister, Venus, in an interview published  in Wednesday’s issue of  New York  magazine,   before laughing at her inadvertent slippage into the past tense. “We are,” she said. “We were. Gosh, is this over?” Not that the tennis champ has a shortage of opportunities beyond court. She said she and her sister “brought fashion back to tennis” with a new line of athletic clothing, and is currently modeling her latest clothing line in an eye-popping photo shoot.

Adeboye urged members to donate to the auditorium project, even as little as N1000, so that the auditorium could be ready in December for the yearly congress.

Sex between Humans and Robots May Soon Become the Norm – Expert Claims

Would YOU have sex with a robot? Experts claim it will be a norm in the next 50 years. Pictured above is android Anita from Channel 4 drama Humans, who at one point in the drama is used as a sex bot by a married man, causing problems in the marriage. The sex scene between the man and her shocked audiences. According to academic Dr Helen Driscoll, a sex psychologist, in a blog post for the Huffington Post, humans spend more time in virtual realities – including online gaming and social media. And our physical relationships will come to be seen as primitive in the near future as humanity embraces machines as partners. Sex mannequins that you can order online already exist, and rapid advances in technology will enable them to ‘come to life’. Robophilia – the word for a sexual attraction to robots – seems like an alien concept to us now, but could become the norm as our attitudes catch up to the technology. ‘As virtual reality becomes more realistic and immersive and is able to m...

Dr. Suniti Solomon, Pioneering Indian HIV/AIDS Researcher, Dies at 76

India’s foremost HIV/AIDS researcher Dr. Suniti Solomon, who documented the nation’s first HIV case before setting up the first voluntary testing and counseling center for the disease, died Tuesday at her home in the southern city of Chennai. Solomon,  who was 76 , began tracking the infection at a time when many in the country were reluctant to delve into what was a little known field. In 1986, her discovery of the infection in six blood samples collected from female sex workers in southern India generated headlines internationally. Speaking to TIME  in September 1986, after the first Indian cases had been documented, a former senior medical official said: “We in India have been shaken and face a moment of truth.” Trained in the U.K., the U.S. and Australia, Solomon won a string of awards for her HIV/AIDS work. What a tragedy...

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but the threat of a Pacific tsunami in the tremor-prone region was thought to have mostly passed. The shallow tremor was centred about 78 kilometres (48 miles) west-northwest of Lata in the Solomon Islands and about 583 kilometres from the capital Honiara, it said, after revising it down from an initial estimate of 7.5. Geoscience Australia, which estimated the quake at 7.3-magnitude, said it was possible that a local tsunami could have been generated within several hundred kilometres (miles) of the jolt. But the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which said its estimate on the quake’s size was 6.9, said that based on all data available “the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now mostly passed”. “Minor sea level fluctuations of up to 0.3 metres above and below the normal tide may continue over the next few hours,” it added. The Solomons are part o...

Director Tyler Perry calls for prayers, respect for Bobbi Kristina Brown

Film maker Tyler Perry appealed on Friday for prayers and respect for the daughter of late singer Whitney Houston as the young woman hangs onto life in a Georgia hospice. The writer and director of the hit “Madea” movies condemned the “blatant disrespect, lies, and ignorance” that have been circulating about Bobbi Kristina Brown, 22, whose family said they had placed her “in God’s hands” three weeks ago.  Celebrity news website TMZ.com and other outlets printed a photo this week that showed a large white tent had been set up at the back of the hospice where Bobbi Kristina is being cared for, fueling speculation that she may be near death. Earlier this month, TMZ reported that a photo was being shopped to the media of the young woman in her hospice bed. TMZ said it declined to take the photo. “May I ask you all to please show some decency and respect? Not only to Krissi’s family, but also to the other families that are there in this place,” Perry, who was a close friend of Wh...

Superhero girl alive after Washington plane crash; 2 others feared dead

Autumn Veatch, 16, couldn't tell the 911 operator where in the Washington state wilderness the small plane went down. Somehow, she survived; her grandparents apparently didn't. Covered in burns and bruises, Autumn hiked out of the rugged North Cascades Mountains two days after Saturday's crash, police said. She flagged down a passing motorist, who drove her to a store in Mazama, Washington, near the Canadian border. The man called police before handing Autumn the phone. "So tell me exactly what happened," the dispatcher told the girl, according to a transcript of the call. "I was riding from Kalispell, Montana, to Bellingham, Washington, and ... well, I don't know where, but we crashed and I was the only one that made it out," Autumn said calmly and in a low voice.  Autumn was flying with her grandparents, Leland and Sharon Bowman, in a small private plane when it apparently ran into trouble. Jessica Jerwa, a spokeswoman for the Washingt...
